I work at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Linguistics to design, evaluate, and improve human language and assistive technologies.

I am currently a third-year Ph.D. student in Computing and Information Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology , and a graduate research assistant at the Center for Accessibility and Inclusion Research. My doctoral advisor is Matt Huenerfauth.

Internships and Work Experience. Currently, I am a student researcher at Google. During summer 2021, I worked as a Research Intern at Google with the Perception team where I work with Thad Starner and George Sung. Previously during summer 2017, I was an intern in the ACM Summer Internship Program.

Thesis Work. My research includes the application of automatic sign langauge recognition to design technologies for people who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and hearing people who are learning sign languages. I focus on the user-centric design and experimental evaluation of sign-language-based tools, as well as the evaluation metrics of the performance of underlying AI technologies. See research section for full list of publications.

Other Research. I am also engaged in other research projects spanning live television captioning, search using performance, detecting and removing social biases in NLP systems, language acquisition, and m-health tools. See research projects section for full list of projects .

Undergrad. Prior to starting at RIT, I did my undergrad at Lahore University of Management Sciences , where I got my Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science .

(** Beyond research I enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction books, painting, and digital art . I am also an avid indie music fan.)

I'm always looking to work with new researchers and talk about shared academic or non-academic interests so please drop me an email.

I also hold the position of Communication Chair within CAIR. I am tasked with keeping the 40+ team of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students organized by setting weekly agendas and inviting interesting speakers to our meetings.
